Types of Acne
- Whiteheads: Also known as closed comedones, these are small, round blemishes with a white tip, caused by pores clogged with sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells.
- Blackheads: Open comedones that appear as small, dark spots on the skin’s surface. The dark color is not due to dirt but is the result of the pore’s contents being exposed to air and oxidizing.
- Papules: Small, red, raised bumps caused by infected or inflamed hair follicles. They can be tender to the touch and are a sign of moderate acne.
- Pustules: Similar to papules but filled with pus. They often have a white or yellowish center with a red ring around the inflammation. Pustules can be painful and are typical in moderate acne.
- Nodules: Larger, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin. They form when blocked pores become increasingly irritated and enlarged, affecting deeper skin layers. Nodules signify more severe acne.
- Cysts: The most severe form of acne, cysts are large, pus-filled lesions that are often painful and can lead to scarring. They result from a severe infection and require professional medical treatment.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is caused by a combination of several factors:
- Excess Oil (Sebum) Production: The sebaceous glands in the skin produce an oily substance called sebum. Overproduction of sebum can lead to clogged pores, which are a primary factor in acne development.
- Clogged Hair Follicles: Hair follicles can become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This blockage is a breeding ground for bacteria and leads to acne.
- Bacteria: The skin harbors certain types of bacteria, such as Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). When follicles are clogged, these bacteria can multiply rapidly, causing inflammation and swelling, leading to acne.
- Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can increase sebum production. Androgens, a type of hormone that increases during puberty, can exacerbate acne.
- Inflammation: The skin’s response to bacteria can result in inflammation, which contributes to the redness and swelling associated with some forms of acne.
- Diet: Certain dietary factors, such as consuming a lot of dairy products and foods high in refined sugars and carbohydrates, might trigger or worsen acne.
- Genetics: A family history of acne can increase one’s risk of developing it.
- Stress: While stress doesn’t directly cause acne, it can exacerbate it by increasing the production of hormones, such as cortisol, which in turn can increase oil production.
- Certain Medications: Some medications, particularly those containing corticosteroids, testosterone, or lithium, can worsen or cause acne.
- Cosmetic Products: Some cosmetic products can clog pores, leading to acne, known as acne cosmetica.
Understanding these factors can help in managing and treating acne more effectively. It’s important to note that acne isn’t caused by uncleanliness, and vigorous washing can actually irritate the skin and make acne worse.
